Captured Alive update 6/8/04!

On December the 12th 2003, Sons and Brothers performed the second concert for their live CD project. Sitting (or standing rather) in the audience that fateful evening was the noted explorer and dentist, Ken Yadon. Armed and dangerous with a professional video camera, Doc Yadon filmed the concert, just for fun. Upon reviewing the film, it was decided that such a great time was had by all that a DVD of the concert was in order. After many long hours of post production work by Mike"Cecil B. DeMille"Wolking and his dad Frank, the DVD is ready for public consumption!

"Captured Alive" the CD features 15 songs and 11 introductions totaling 26 tracks on one Compact Disc. "Captured Alive DVD-the Rest of the Story" features 13 songs and 12 introductions totaling 25 tracks on the DVD. Here's the kicker. There are songs on the CD that are not on the DVD and there are songs on the DVD that are not on the CD. So, the obvious solution is for you to buy both!

Below is a review of "Captured Alive" the CD by Joe Ross, a staff writer for Bluegrass Now magazine.

The Sons and Brothers’ fourth album project was recorded live on December 11-12, 2003 at the Horn Creek Amphitheater in south-central Colorado. At
approximately 9,400 feet elevation on the side of Horn Peak, Horn Creek overlooks the beautiful Wet Mountain Valley and the quaint western town of
Westcliffe, Colorado. You’d think that the thin air at that elevation would make it difficult to pick bluegrass, but The Sons and Brothers were on their
home turf and rose professionally and commendably to embrace the special occasion. The audiences were large and receptive, the band well-rehearsed
and full of energy, and the sound engineer was right on. Everyone had a good party. Over six hours of recorded material were boiled down to over an
hour’s worth for this project.

The Sons and Brothers band includes mandolin and guitar-player Frank Wolking and his three sons, Mike (guitar, dobro, banjo), Aaron (acoustic bass
guitar), and Joe (mandolin, fiddle). From Westcliffe, a small town at the base of Colorado’s Sangre de Cristo Mountains, this band started in 1998 as
a Christian music band. Their emphasis on both secular and sacred music holds a great appeal for many. Drawing its material from Bill Monroe (Blue
Moon of Kentucky) and traditional (Drifting Too Far From the Shore) to The Rolling Stones (Wild Horses) and John Denver/Emmylou Harris (Wild Montana Skies), the band’s appeal is largely due to their varied repertoire.

This charismatic group is also very comfortable on stage, and they clearly know how to work a crowd with their showmanship and stage presence. This
album includes the introductions to the songs, and those offer some insight in how the band properly establishes an excellent rapport with their
audiences. After introducing the band’s “wonder boy,” Aaron Wolking launches into an enchanting gospel song, “This One Belongs to Me.” Their own fiery instrumental version of “Dusty Miller” becomes their set closer, “Dusty Minor.” Ron Thomason introduces the band in his typically humorous manner, and he also joins the band for some numbers at the end of this CD. Their “token train song” is an uptempo allegorical message about a man’s encounter with God. A rousing rendition of Ola Belle Reed’s “I Believe” is a real crowd-pleaser, as is their encore rendition of Phil Rosenthal’s “Take Him In.” This impressive live album provides strong evidence of this band’s work
ethic, and it gives us a strong indication that The Sons and Brothers are rising stars in the bluegrass community. (Joe Ross)

Hey Aaron,

Many thanks for sending us a copy of your spectacular live outing which I have enjoyed immensely.  Our mutual friend, Elaine Goldberg, has been raving about the evening ever since it occurred (I came perilously close to flying out to see the event for myself) and the project more than captures a good chunk of the magic that must have occurred that evening.

You all played and sung some inspired music-punctuated by some great picking, nicely paced tunes, but most of all, some of the most powerful and passionate singing on the bluegrass planet.  I especially enjoyed "Wild Montana Skies," "Zaccheus," "Dusty Minor," "Buckaroo Dream" and "It Is Well With My Soul."

If you all are willing, I'd love to feature you in my upcoming "Band to Watch" column in Bluegrass Now magazine.  You'd get a full page, a photo and contact information and hopefully some additional interest in the band as a result.  For this to happen, I'll need to arrange a telephone interview sometime in the near future.  Let me know when you all are going to be around and we'll get this done.

Thanks again for the wonderful tunes!  I'll be doing my best to get the word out here in Nashville and in our other syndicated locations.

Hi there,

Just wanted to congratulate you all on your new "live" cd.  It's great !   I listened to it several times straight through on my way home from Grand Junction yesterday... and I don't do that with albums I don't enjoy, believe me.   Thanks for your fine music!!!
